Moonlighting: is it good?

After hearing about the big layoffs by some of  the industry giants like Meta, Amazon, Google, Twitter, etc., I got to know that some of them were due to a process called "Moonlighting".

Such a fancy word! But then I did some research on it and got to know that a pretty face doesn't guarantee a good heart.

With the economies and jobs becoming increasingly demanding and competitive, people might like the idea of moonlighting. As lucrative it may appear, but it also raises questions about the ethics and morals of a person.

Moonlighting refers to the situation where a person undertakes a secondary work alongside their primary job. With rising prices of even the basic commodities, the desire to be financially stable/ strong is also ever increasing. Recently, several big companies like google and twitter have given quite a few layoffs. This has led to an increased sense of insecurity among the working community. These two are the primary reasons why moonlighting is gaining popularity among people.

However, all that glitters is not gold. It raises a question on the morals of the person. It reduces the productivity and focus of the person in both the jobs. It may even be illegal as per the employment contract of the company. The company while recruiting, trusts its employees to stay loyal and transparent with them.  Nonetheless, such an action may create a sense of distrust and suspicion between them.

To summarize, moonlighting as a practice should not be encouraged in the society. If a person is genuinely experiencing financial troubles, then they may talk about it with their employers first. This shows their honesty, loyalty and helps them keep up the good image.
